U.S. wind power growing fast but still lags

CNET NEWS -- Wind-generated electricity is growing rapidly in the United States but the pace still lags far behind that in China, the organizer of an industry conference in North Carolina said.

"With the right policies in place, we can see explosive growth...It's a global footrace," said Jeff Anthony, business development director of the American Wind Energy Association.

Although the United States has the largest amount of installed wind power capacity in the world, the wind power industry is "fighting to get on a level playing field" with other government-subsidized power providers, Anthony told a conference of parts manufacturers, suppliers, wind project developers, and economic development officers from around the southeastern United States.

"What the wind industry looks like in the U.S.

I think Solar homes is the most logical way to go. Wind Farms cause big problems for bats and the pollution their concrete bases will cause down the road etc.

gasokie from OK...

You have posted similar sentiments on other alternative energy threads, and frankly you need to take some responsibility for your negativity if you are not posting for points!

It is a no-brainer to Google PSO or OGE to determine if the Wind energy project proposed would be to your benefit. If the project is not in your state, then Google that state's utility and do the Math yourself to determine if it is cost beneficial. Then you will have substantive information...good or bad...to bring back to the respective thread.

Don't expect to be spoon-fed all the information, most news sources expect you to do some of the work too.

ifallsguy has the right idea and the right info. Thank you! If you have a windy home site, the Honeywell system may be the way to go. Much more should be done right at home, office, and business sites to eliminate the need for additional new and expensive transmission lines and all the energy lose that is incurred. Go solar, wind, geothermal, and fuel cell. It's the future.

Good news. We need to be using more alternative sources of energy. OPEC and the greedy oil speculators are already too rich.

Good to hear we're catching up. Sad to hear that as advanced as our country is, we are still lagging at the pace of a 3rd world country.

Wind power is a phony savings issue. The public deserves facts as to cost and benefits.

We will never know the real cost until it can stand on its own cost to produce and market.

If this was a great idea they wouldn't be worried about the "govenrment-subsidized power providers. Why are we subsidizing them in the first place?

Did you notice that wind power in the US only took off when that giant corporation General Electric got into the business and developed the sizable segment of the industry; with grants, stimulus, tax breaks etc.; money talks; money makes money!!!

I know US wind power lags and is growing, and we'll still not do enough with it, or for that matter with tidal, hydrogen, nuclear, natural gas, methane, etc. Not even with drilling for more oil here at home, which we still need to do.

Much more needs to be done to harness the many forces of nature before we can even begin to realize an energy independence. Every year, BILLIONS of our dollars are being lost to the Global Oil Empire of producers, refiners, distributors, traders, speculators, and local gas station. Our elected leaders in Congress has done nothing to ease or pain. Rather, the largesses doled out by the corrupt and contemptable oil industry to those who have the sworn obligation to legislate in the best interests of their constitiuents are instead only serving the special interests of those that stuffed their pockets with millions of ill begotten gains.

"Big Oil" is waging a war against gasoline consumers who have no other choice but to pay the piper. These economic terrorists are hell bent on stealing every penny from our already near empty pockets.

A letter to the editor in our local paper this morning warned about the evils of wind power on the sea shore. It seems it will change the beaches so sea life will not be able to survive as we know it. So even if it would help our dependency on (foreign) oil it would be bad as far as some people are concerned.

There are so many places that wind turbines - especially smaller ones - can be utilized. The most amusing one I recently saw were vertical ones on top of some parking lot lights at a mall.

We need to make this a priority before China beats us in yet another industry. Europe also has a lead on wind turbine usage and the UK has the most off shore wind turbines in the world.

Forget what China is doing. This is not a race. We need to do what is right for our country.

The wind may not be blowing around your house right now, but there are other places where it is. Also, there are places where the wind is blowing basically non-stop.

Build them here, install them here, now! (Trade mark!) (My version of the drill here, drill now chant.)

Ditto for Solar.

I wonder how much bang for our buck we get from wind. I think allowing the oil companies to explore on our coastal shelves without giving them subsidies will get us a lot more energy and a close less damage to the ecology than what China and Russia will do on our coastal areas.

That's nice. A plague upon the landscape. Most likely it will be the taxpayers who get to clear and clean up the mess after these cement and steel towers have been FULLY DEPRECIATED FOR TAXES by the investors. Still haven't heard anything at all from politicians about forcing the investors to foot the bill, and probably we never will.

It's a viable component of our energy equation but, like all others, we can't just assume it's the right answer in every situation.

This lag in wind power development is due largely in part to Senators and congressmen in blue states who don't want it in their districts.

The U.S. is making progress but we need to continue promoting more use windmills. I have alway been fascinated by windmills and can remember when almost every farmhouse had one. They are awesome looking when you can see the blades turning on the horizon. I haven't been up close enough to hear if the blades made a noise, but anyone living next to an airport or an Interstate highway would gladly trade for the noise of a windmill.
