Parents use technology to monitor teen drivers

USA Today -- When Rich Pilat's daughter, Jennifer, was 16 and just starting to drive on her own, he wanted to install a device in her car that would monitor her driving activity and allow him to track where she went -- along with whether she had done any sudden braking or had been speeding.

It was a tough sell, says Pilat, 47, an independent insurance agent in the Cleveland area. "At first, she was absolutely against the idea," he says.

Then he told her that the insurance-company-provided device -- designed to track the mileage of low-mileage customers, who pay lower rates -- would mean a sharp reduction in her share of the monthly premiums.

"I told her, imagine cutting your share in half. I'll give you the whole discount," Pilat says. "That was enough motivation for her to say OK."

Parents have a responsibility to keep an eye on their kids until they are 18. At 15-17 they have a lot of influences. Even the best kids can make stupid decisions. They just aren't mature at that age. My nephew did not really mature until he go to 25 years old.

"... It would set a dangerous precedent to employ this technology without letting the children know"

So it ought to be STANDARD. Just DO IT! They shouldn't HAVE the choice, unless they are paying for the vehicle AND their insurance without aid of the parental unit(s).

If you are compliant, this should be a good thing, as long as it's kept in the family.

Sounds like this parent wants to live in a different country then America. We need less gov't control and more liberty and freedom.

I can see a lot of drawbacks to this. It puts the driver to a big disadvantage in the case of an accident for instance.

Imagine this: You have a traffic accident. The other guy is killed. There are no eyewitnesses on record. The police officer documenting the accident reaches under the dash and un-plugs this gizmo. Now your car can be used as a witness against you. Don't think it can't happen. It has.

Somewhere on line is a way to deactivate it and teens will sure find it.
