the proper mix would be reducing the need for oil and gas by increasing renewable energy production while increasing domestic production in the interim. we have increased domestic production , decreased domestic use and still the prices have cone higher . Stop the manipulation of oil prices. reducing the need for oil is still the best long term solution.

@ Tehbob, what subsidies do you refer too? And could you differentiate between these "tax breaks" from those that every industry can take advantage of?

The US and Canada need further development of alternatives and not just heavy oil.

Remember the candidate that has this as a goal. Or stop complaining about prices. Obama wants high priced fuel to force a change to alternatives. Read the book "the amateur". To confirm.

If one were to wait for energy independent based solely on renewable sources only, one would be 6' under many times over before that happens. While it is true that we need to continue to conduct R&D in solar and hydrogen fuel cells, etc., giving loan guarantees to Solyndra and Solar 1 is not the way to go. The Obama Administration definitely doesn't get it!

No one has to be 'industry experts and market analysts' to come to that conclusion. Common sense should tell us not only that the concept is correct but that current political policy is just plain wrong. It is impossible to even think about energy independence under this administration. Truth is we can't have it both ways. Either we go after our own resources or we continue on the wrong path. For the country as a whole, it's pretty much put up or shut up.

I agree with previous writer, a consistent energy policy is what we need. Hard to plan ahead if energy policies change with each new administration.

What an interesting comment from the oil industry!
So energy independence can only be achieved if the government props them up... right..
The government needs to support the up and coming industries, not the outdated and dying industries, unless you just want to be outdated and die...

At attention folks, "North American energy independence would bring with it hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of new jobs in a rejuvenated energy industry, said Whitfield in opening remarks for the hearing on "The American Energy Initiative".
"Indeed, it would succeed where the stimulus package failed, and rather than cost over $800 billion it would actually add revenues to the federal treasury," said Whitfield."

Please see the other article on 42 National Parks eligible for drilling which includes the 9/11 memorial site in Pennsylvania. Responsible drilling is fine. Reckless drilling is irresponsible.

Drill, baby, drill...
Better to get oil from our own country than paying Venezuala to do it (they are our 4th largest supplier of foreign oil)
... or Brazil. "When you’re ready to start selling, we want to be one of your best customers," Obama said in his address to the CEO Business Summit in Brasilia.
