New La. oil leak near Gulf covers 6 square miles

MSNBC / Associated Press -- NEW ORLEANS — A ruptured wellhead in Louisiana's Barataria Bay has spread a slick of oil covering 6 square miles, the U.S. Coast Guard said on Wednesday.

Oil, natural gas and water spewed from the abandoned underwater wellhead hit by a barge pushed by a tug.

The Coast Guard ordered the last recorded owner of the well, a company called Cydeco, to pay for the clean-up costs.

Wild Well Control Inc. of Houston has been hired to secure the well and Environmental Health and Services has been hired to manage the cleanup, the Coast Guard said.

By late Wednesday, 10,500 feet of containment boom and 3,000 feet of absorbent boom has been deployed to contain the spill.

Thirty-one boats have responded to the spill, said Coast Guard Capt. John Arenstam.

The Coast Guard said a tow

saturn93: that's like asking the captain, who ran another vessel aground exactly where the Exxon Valdez did, to pay up for that disaster. Where is he going to get the money for it? That's why companies as a whole carry liability insurance.

How about the responsibility of the crew who steered the barge into the well?

I hope that Cydeco has some deep pockets, because this could prove expensive to clean up as well. As if Louisiana needs any more oil on their shores...

I don't know about this one... The folks who hit the darn thing should be paying. Anyone navigating the waters should have been paying attention to the bouys and watching the depth finder. Bad decision on the Tug boat operator. I'd pull his license!

jrsva...You have sadly been made one of those naive enough to believe the propaganda. There is more than 2000 years worth of oil in the US, just in the Dakotas and Alaska alone. For one, 2000 years doesnt sound "finite" and in Michigan they just discovered that oil is not a fossil fuel. It is renewing in several closed and capped wells there. For two, watch the news or read up on information before making a fool of yourself through your comments in the future.

Oh give it a break RG. Jeez. Oil is a finite resource and recoverable resources will be used up in a finite time. We need alternative, renewable, non-polluting energy sources.

This is not BP. This is the earth not capable of holding its oil in. Yet we are told repeatedly, we are nearly out of oil!! We must find alternatives! Really?!! NOT!!! Wise up folks, you have been led down the propaganda trail!

According to the article,

"The towboat captain told investigators the well was not lit as required."

So, before we go off in all directions (again), let's allow the proper agencies to do their due diligence investigating everything, including the towboat captain's claim.

IF indeed, it can be verified that the well was not properly lit, then, of course, penalize the oil company. However, is it beyond the realm of probability that perhaps the driver made a mistake and is responsible for the accident?

Have any of you ever made an admittedly stupid move while driving, leading to an accident, and were tempted to create a cover story to hide your liability?

I'm not saying that the towboat captain in this case did such a thing. I'm just urging everyone to allow things to take their course. This is why we have investigations.

Let's hope more accidents like this are not out there waiting to happen. Unfortunately they most likely are as these abandoned wells get older and deteriorate.

Was this story provided to MSNBC by the BP PR Department to take some of the heat off of them? This is more evidence of lax safety in the Oil Industry.

Did these things happen all the time and we just didn't hear about them? Or have oil companies just become really really negligent recently?

What would happen if the company that last owned the well no longer existed? Already companies are transferring ownership of these types of capital to royalty trusts and such. What will happen to these wells 50 years from now?

For example:

The trust owned 10 wells. They were drained, and the profits were distributed to the shareholders through dividends. What funds were left were used to close down production, and pay some lawyers to wind down the trust. If one or more of these wells leak 10 years later, who pays? The trust is penniless -- a few scraps of paper in some lawyers office. The shareholders and management are gone.
