U.S. wind power growing fast but still lags

CNET NEWS -- Wind-generated electricity is growing rapidly in the United States but the pace still lags far behind that in China, the organizer of an industry conference in North Carolina said.

"With the right policies in place, we can see explosive growth...It's a global footrace," said Jeff Anthony, business development director of the American Wind Energy Association.

Although the United States has the largest amount of installed wind power capacity in the world, the wind power industry is "fighting to get on a level playing field" with other government-subsidized power providers, Anthony told a conference of parts manufacturers, suppliers, wind project developers, and economic development officers from around the southeastern United States.

"What the wind industry looks like in the U.S.

I find that these huge tower are not very attractive driving by. I hate to say this but nuclear energy away from populated areas is the best in my opinion.

Because in China they still have vast swaths of farmland that the authoritarian government has no trouble razing to put up windmills. Whereas here, there's people who fight them at every turn because we can't just up and make people leave when we wanna install a farm.

If the government is subsidizing, ultimately the government controls it.

They should put 1000's of wind generators around Washington Dc ( and Ottawa Canada) we would then have a surplus of power

I'm with fedex09, sounds great till gets to gov't subsidized...I guess wind isn't subsidized enough compared to others - but still better than subsidizing corn-E. Of course China is big gov't who even subsidized gasoline (maybe still does).

No one is saying how profitable it is.

If it has to be Government-Subsidized, it's not.

The words I dislike to hear are "government subsidized" If a product cant stand on it's own then it should be developed more until it can stand on its own.

Not sure that this alternative energy source will ever succeed in the US because of the growing objection of residents that have the turbine farms located in their neighborhoods and complain about the noise generated by these turbines.

Pede, nothing new there, though the volume seems to be increasing. Maybe telepromters could have a windmill attachment and some good might flow . . . .

9C1,

Yes you'll want "alternative" power sources available (they don't need to be conventional) when the Wind Generation is "offline". Yes, just like with Solar (which one could say is more reliable) you'll want to factor in use of "constant" power sources as required.

The cool thing is that those "constant" power Sources may not need to be running at 100% as often... which means any pollutants it may generate won't be as much... had Wind/Solar not been part of the equation.

It isn't part of today's "One Plant" model... where power is centralized... but there is some positives to decentralize power generation. You can have "Central" then have plenty of smaller generators (conventional or otherwise) in local areas... The footprint might be much smaller in that "Central" will allows be providing power... but most of it will be local... and power usually wasted by "Central" just to transmit and be ready for that "peak" need at any moment will save plenty of costs.

The initial cost would seem to be the major drawback for most homeowners that I know. From there on it would take care of itself until it was time for the maintenance which is said can be costly if anything major were needing replacement.

Imagine the environmental impact if we actually dedicated enough land to supply a significant percentage of our electricity from wind. For that matter, I wonder if taking that much energy out of the air might cause greater changes to our weather patterns than whatever might be caused by CO2 emissions.

there is a business in CT that installed a wind turbine to generate 1/3 of his power may if that does well he will install a second one to take over more of his power needs.
