If speculators were removed from the market, crude would be trading between $25 and $35 a barrel, and not flirting with "breaking $100"...

Some rule changes would do this - quickly and simply:

1. require that buyers of futures contracts have the physical capacity to TAKE DELIVERY

2. require that sellers of futures contracts either possess the actual product, or be in the actual business of producing/growing/manufacturing the actual product

3. make naked short-selling illegal - period.

4. restore the up-tick rule for covered short sales.

No action by "congress" is needed - just a rule change by the SEC, an almost overnight process should they decide to "grow a pair" and do what needs be done.

Remember: the opposite of PRO is CON
So - that must mean the opposite of PROgress is CONgress...

Annual emissions and safety inspections are also required in Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Both of those states have been doing annual safety inspections for at LEAST the past fifty years. Emission tests came later, but at least for the past twenty years.

what people don't realize it that you are already being watched, think about it just about all of the calls you make to business has caller ID and most of them have recorded phone calls they claim is for quality assurance but it is really in case you get PO at them, also the cameras you see at the intersections and along the highway, store security cameras just in about every store and parking lot cell pones has a tracking device built into them in which law enforcement has access to.

information is power. And power can be used for Good or evil. And Power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely.

This is by the NY Times. Something that is more left than the President. (if that's possible)

Yes, information could be used for good. Even taxing by the mile driven, vs by the gallon of gas. But it could also issue Speeding tickets, seat belt tickets, Plus knowing where you were, and tracking you. (the Gov't stalking you)

If certainly could take away your freedoms.

"Big Brother" just keeps getting bigger and bigger. Once is starts, law enforcement will want more and more data, like where have I been, what was I doing. Once they get the foot in the door, which it sounds like they already have, they will want more and more until they know every move you make.

Toyota already has data recorders in many of their cars and they purposely don't collect or ignore the data that could make them liable for manufacturing or design defects. This is just idle talk unless Congress is going to get really tough with auto makers. (Like that ever happens!)

Giro in his post states that the article is incorrect, specifically "Current federal law requires annual emissions and safety inspections for all cars." There is annual vehicle emissions and safety inspections for all vehicles in South Dakota and Wyoming.

Cost would be very low and a device is already available. Progressive insurance has a monitoring device that tracks driving behavior.

From WalletPop december 23, 2009,

"That's the deal now offered in 19 states by Progressive Insurance, as it works to take its MyRate program national.
The company uses three criteria for the MyRate discount: defensive driving practices, low annual mileage (under 10,000 miles), and little driving after midnight.

The device Progressive installs in covered vehicles captures speed and time-of-day data, and from this can identify risky behavior such as jackrabbit starts and panic stops. Drivers are able to access their driving history online to make sure they are in compliance.

In case you're wondering, the device is not GPS equipped, so it can't tell the difference between a trip to church or the nudie bar, as long as the distances are the same."

The device that progressive uses plugs into the vehicle's data module inside the vehicle (usually to the lower right or left of the steering column)and can then be unplugged, connected to a USB port and uploaded to Progressive. I tried the device for a year and did not see very much savings.

Sounds interesting, though the statement "Current federal law requires annual emissions and safety inspections for all cars." is just not true in many non-metropolitan areas.

I haven't needed a smog test since moving to a mountain town, though ironically we have just about every other ordinance including limits on the house footprint based on the lot topography and soil type, but not taking into account proximity to others, creeks, or the lake.
