likely to tack on too much extra to the sticker price, and would be part of the 'standard' model. no thanks.

aldog365, I agree with you completely.
Get rid of a computer controlling the gas peddle and just hook the gas pedal direct by linkage to the throttle body.
They have taken away our control and given it to a computer that can be disrupted by stray electrical fields.

I can see the value of a black box to record data while the vehicle is running but the use of this data should be restricted to the car manufactures, with exception that the government can examine it once they are notified of problems.

We didnt have this problem til we went to (drive by wire). When we had cables, throttle bodies, and sensors and a ign keys,we had control. Now it's all wiring. To many possibilitys for outside electrical interferance.real time sucks.GM has done this with ONSTAR.It can be tracked by satelite. One day, you'll be monitored by law inforcement and they will just mail your speeding ticket to you.Or if your engine light comes on,you'll get a card in the mail to get it fixed in 30 days.

Ok Put these devices on Rentals, maybe leases. But NOT on POV. Maybe mom and dad want it for the kids car. But are we going to just let the police sit in their office and write out tickets? we have enough cameras on the street doing that now.

Just make talking on the cell phone while driving a capital offense.
That will cut way back on accidents.

These systems can also monitor driving habits - day, time, speed, hard stops, etc. If your habits are good, it can result in lower insurance rates, if your insurer has such a program.

WonderfulMI, this is exactly the type of thinking that has led to many atrocities in our world! Look up the Nuremberg Laws, it just might open your naive eyes.

You bet. What the country really needs is more ways for the government to keep track of you - and don't think they won't use their "black boxes" to do so - going too fast? Expect a ticket in the mail.

This would be great news, and would benefit all of us.
As regards people who are afraid of what would be collected: Don't break the law. If you are obeying the law, you should have nothing to worry about. There would be far too much data for anyone to sift through to find the little things that you do every day.
The only worthwhile efforts would be focused on data related to problem - accidents and malfunctions. Nobody really cares if you drive to the store. Nobody cares haw you drive, as long as you do not endanger anyone. Nobody really care what you are doing. You just are not that important. Sorry to "burst your bubble", but if you are not a major lawbreaker or involved in loss of life or property, we just don't care what you do.

Data without thoughtful, meaningful analysis may be worse than no data. Sometime associations are made that are not related in the manner presented.

The danger, or concern, here is WHO gets the data. Insurance companies are already offering potential discounts to those who will let them monitor their driving. If it is at the discretion of the vehicle owner, great. If not, then I don't want just anybody getting the data without my consent.
